‍ ‍From Clinical Practice to African Baobab Forests

KAIBAE was founded from an unusual intersection of medicine, scientific research, and African fieldwork.

As a naturopathic physician with more than 35 years of clinical experience in functional medicine andbotanical medicine, I have spent my career searching for the root causes of chronic disease rather than simply treating symptoms. Over decades of clinical practice, one recurring observation became impossible to ignore.

Patients with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, digestive disorders, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune conditions, and chronic inflammation often shared a common denominator—a modern diet lacking the diverse fibers and polyphenols that humans evolved to consume.

This realization led me beyond the clinic and into the scientific literature, where rapidly expanding research was revealing the profound influence of the gut microbiome on human health.

Today, thousands of peer-reviewed publications demonstrate that the microorganisms living within our digestive tract influence metabolism, immune regulation, inflammatory balance, cardiovascular function, and even brain health.

The question became simple:

Could traditional plant foods provide nutritional solutions that modern diets have lost?

That question ultimately led to baobab.

Following the Science—and the Source

Rather than relying solely on published research, I wanted to understand baobab where it has been consumed for centuries.

Beginning more than fifteen years ago, I traveled repeatedly to West Africa, conducting ethnobotanical research with local communities, harvesters, processors, exporters, and agricultural experts.

These expeditions were never tourism.

They were opportunities to study how traditional cultures incorporated baobab into daily nutrition, how harvesting could be performed sustainably, and whether a responsible supply chain could improve both human health and rural livelihoods.

What I discovered exceeded every expectation.

Baobab had quietly supported African communities for generations while preserving biodiversity and requiring no irrigation, synthetic fertilizers, or commercial cultivation.

Its nutritional profile was equally remarkable.

Baobab naturally contains prebiotic soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, pectin, diverse polyphenols, naturally occurring vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and other essential micronutrients within a whole-food matrix that modern nutritional science increasingly recognizes as critical for microbiome diversity and metabolic health.

Connecting Ancient Nutrition with Modern Gut Microbiome Research

As microbiome science accelerated, baobab became even more compelling. Researchers now recognize that dietary fibers are not interchangeable.

Different fibers nourish different microbial communities, leading to the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids that help maintain intestinal barrier function, metabolic flexibility, and healthy immune regulation.

Baobab provides a naturally diverse spectrum of fermentable fibers and polyphenols that align remarkably well with this emerging science.

Scientific integrity alone was never enough.

If KAIBAE was going to introduce baobab to the global marketplace, it needed to create measurable benefits for the communities that have protected these trees for generations.

Today, KAIBAE works directly with more than 1,000 harvesting families in Northern Ghana, creating dependable market opportunities while encouraging the conservation of native baobab trees.

Because the fruit is harvested from naturally occurring trees rather than plantations, local communities have a powerful economic incentive to preserve mature baobab populations instead of clearing land for agriculture.

This model supports biodiversity, strengthens rural livelihoods, and provides manufacturers with a transparent, traceable supply chain built on long-term partnerships rather than commodity purchasing.

A Different Kind of Ingredient Company

Many companies sell ingredients.

Few understand both the clinical application and the agricultural origin of those ingredients.

KAIBAE was built upon three complementary foundations:

Tom works is an agroecologist and drought management advisor for global USAID food security programs. Tom is a world-class frisbee player and Aloe expert.

The Doctor, Researcher

Dr. Luc is a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine with 35 years of practice experience integrating Functional Medicine, Classical Homeopathy and Medical Botany at the Maes Center for Natural Healthcare in Santa Barbara California. His research includes the study of ethnobotany throughout Africa, Central and South America. When not behind his desk is he is out hiking, sailing or exploring nature.

Barbara’s journey includes work as a curator and project manager for the cities of Chicago and Portland’s 1% for the Arts Public Programs. She manages the Maes Center for Natural Health Care and KAIBAE. Barbara loves yoga, hiking and rewilding herself every moment she can.
